Books Ahoy! Tomorrow, When the War Began

Title: Tomorrow, When the War Began
Author: John Marsden
Publisher:  Pan Macmillan
My Rating: 4 out of 5

Tomorrow, When the War Began is a young adult book which is the first book of the Tomorrow Series. The Book is about a group of teenagers, who after camping find that their country (Australia) has been invaded and is at war.

Basic Plot Summary: Ellie and a group of her friends go camping in a secluded part of the Australian bush before their return to school. After they return home they find that their small town of Wirrawee has been invaded by a foreign country, and the residents are being held captive. The group take on a somewhat guerrilla style of warfare to try to win back their small town from the invading forces.

When i first began reading this book i was slightly turned off by the style of writing. Marsden has written this book in first person, with the main character of Ellie telling the story. I have read a number of books in this style and i generally prefer them, the thing that turned me off was that this book was written as if you were sitting talking to this character. Including the character jumping around topics and including personal remarks. This did, however, seem to not be included in the rest of the book and I therefore began to enjoy this style of writing again.

Tomorrow, When the War Began had everything that i could possibly want from a book, romance, drama and thrills. I was kept on my toes while reading this book and would find myself reading into the early hours of the morning. After putting the books down for the night i would often lie there thinking about what i just read. This is the first book of this genre that i have read and i now wonder why i didn't read them sooner.

As soon as i finished this book i picked up the next, The Dead of The Night. This book will be my next review.
